SharePoint Anniversaries & Birthdays Web Parts

Thanks for checking out this video about SharePoint Implemented's Anniversaries and Birthdays web parts. Let's see it now.

Oh wow, I can't believe Pat has been with the company for 14 years. He's definitely one of the old-timers. I don't know what the department would do without him. Oh and check it out, Jason's birthday is coming up in a few days. I remember his first day here. He fit into the company so well from day one and got along with everyone. What a great guy. Ohhh wait a minute, the admin entered in his birthday incorrectly. Let me fix it.

So his hire date is correct. That's where the Anniversary web part is pulling from. But the birthday should be the 26th. That's easy to change.

Ok, that looks better. We're supposed to have cake for him in the break room. That would be strange if we surprised him on the wrong day. Anyway, let me see anniversaries coming up this month.

I'll just change that to display in months, not years. It's the same process for birthdays. Let's see what that looks like.

There it is....oh, my anniversary is coming up! I forgot about that. I wonder if they give cake for anniversaries like they do for birthdays? Hmmmm.......

SharePoint 2010 Employee Spotlight Web Part

Thanks for checking out this video about SharePoint Implemented's Employee Spotlight web part. Let's jump right in.

I'm the VP and I love to give my employees the spotlight on the Intranet home page when they achieve something great. Giving kudos to someone is a real motivator and a feel good sort of thing. I do it regularly. The IT guy showed me how simple it is to add a new entry.

I just go to this screen and let's say I want to acknowledge Lindsay for exceeding her sales targets this month. I just type it in here...I'll just say..."You broke your sales targets....awesome work!". Then I hit save. And that's all.

Lindsay's gonna love it when she sees it because I know she really worked hard this month. Okay... Where is it... Is it coming... Oh there it is. It feels good to have a pat on the back every once in a while. Would that be strange if I patted myself on the back by announcing on this web part that I think I'm a great VP? Yeah, that would be a little strange. Never mind.

SharePoint 2010 Tip of the Day Web Part

Thanks for checking out this video about SharePoint Implemented's Tip of the Day web part. Let's jump right in.

I love coming into work in the morning and checking out all of the little feel-good things on the company Intranet home page. Like today's Tip of the Day, which we call Quotes of the Day in my company, is "Ideas are like children; there are none so wonderful as your own." I love that. You know, that reminds me of a quote by the famous author John Steinbeck. Ohhh... I'm gonna put it in the list so that everyone will see it tomorrow.

So, here's all of the other cute phrases. I remember when Judy put in the optimism quote here, "Today is a lucky day for those who remain cheerful and optimisc." This phrase created a positive buzz around the office the whole day. It was really cool. I know that some companies put in serious stuff in this list but my company likes to keep it light-hearted. Anyway, I'm going to add a new item.

So, John Steinbeck said, "Ideas are like rabbits. You get a couple and learn how to handle them, and pretty soon, you have a dozen." I love Steinbeck. I can't wait until tomorrow when it shows up for the whole company to see. Anyway, that was a cool little 2 minute warm-up to start a great day. I better get onto my tasks now.

SharePoint 2010 User Directory Search Web Part

Thanks for checking out this video about SharePoint Implemented's User Directory Search web part. Let's get right into it.

We just got a new employee in our company. It's my job as admin to add him to the User Directory List so that people who use the User Directory Search web part can find his details. I've already started adding the new record. His name is Keith Jackson, he was hired yesterday and his birthday is on April 1, 1937. By the way, if this record were in Outlook, I could have just imported it from there.

And there he is on the list of users. I'll add a photo some other time. It's easy enough to indicate a path to an image file. Let's check if he shows up on the home page.

That User Directory List is the data source for 3 web parts including the Birthday's web part, and this employment Anniversary web part. Note he'll show up here as approaches his 1 year mark in the company. The 3rd web part is this User Directory Search Web Part that we've been talking about. In this company, we've renamed it to Employee Lookup. So, as a test, I'll just for my new user by his last name.

And there he is! Easy! If only all of my admin tasks were that easy!

SharePoint 2010 Project Plan Web Part

Thanks for checking out this video about SharePoint Implemented's Project Plan web part. Let's get right into it.

I'm a computer guy and today's a really busy day for me at work. Let me see exactly what I'm going to work on next. By the way, this is my company's Intranet home page. And now, I'm going to click up here to get to the project I've been assigned to.

Wow, check out the Project Plan. It has been evolving so fast. It's really great to see how the team is really working hard to get it done.

This item is mine. It's red which means it's not been marked complete yet. Hmm, I thought I finished it. This one below it is also red... I know John is working on it right now. Let me click on mine and see what's up with it.

Oh, yes I did finish it. Let me email my manager to mark it complete. Or better yet, let me launch Microsoft Project and do it myself. I could do all of this in Microsoft Outlook Tasks, but my personal preference is Microsoft Project.

The Microsoft Project Plan file that corresponds to this project plan should be right here in the Project Documents folder which is just a SharePoint documents library. Ah, there it is.

So this is it in Microsoft Project. Down here, it says it's connected to SharePoint. And here's my item. Let's see what happens after I mark it complete here and tell it to update back into SharePoint.

Oh good, my item is green. Oh and John's item is green now too. He must have just marked it complete. Wow, it's like we're in perfect synchronization without even knowing it. SharePoint has brought us to the same place at the same time. I wonder if we're wearing the same color pants too. Hmm...

SharePoint 2010 Project Contact Info Web Part

Thanks for checking out this video about SharePoint Implemented's Project Contact Info web part. Let's get right into it.

I'm in charge of my department and I'm on the company Intranet home page right now. I'm wondering how the Website Redesign Project is going. Hmm, let me check up on those guys. I'll just click up here.

Here's the project page and here's how I can see the progress at a glance. Looks like there's still a long way to go but so far, they're doing ok. They've only spent $5,580 out of the estimated $36,000. That seems aligned with the 62 hours of the estimated 400. I just had Charlie, our computer guy, do 8 hours worth of work today. Hmm... I wonder how much that 8 hours cost the department?

Let's see, this page is telling me the estimated hours and dollars that I saw earlier. Ah, here's the bill rate: $90/hour. Let me put the 8 hours that Charlie did into the system and see how that affects things.

So I'll put the title here and the 8 billed hours here.

And sure enough, the dollars and hours have gone up as expected. You know, at this rate of progress, I can predict that the future is going to be great for this project. Hmm, I sound like a have a magic crystal ball or something at my fingertips. I wonder if it knows what the football game's score is going to be tonight? SharePoint's got a web part for everything.

SharePoint 2010 Department Contact Info

Thanks for checking out this video about SharePoint Implemented's Department Contact Info web part. Let's see what it's all about.

Mr. Robert Dillon just retired yesterday as head of the Human Resources Department. 22 year of service. Wow. Anyway, I just took over his position today. My name is Jack Fallon. And I'm going to update our HR department's home page. Let me click here to get to it.

Here's the department page and here's the Department Contact Info web part. I want to change Robert's name to my name. Let me pull up the web part Properties.

Ah, I see the information is contained in a list called Contacts. Let me open that list.

Sure enough, it says Robert. Let me pull up the Edit window and change it to my details.

Ok, easy enough. I just put in my name instead of Robert. And let's see if that did the trick.

Ah, good it worked. Ok, no problem. I wonder if I'll be here for 22 years just like Robert? I guess I'll find out. Please check back in 22 years from now and I'll let you know as well.
