A SharePoint portal represents a leap in productivity software. Think of it like a central hive of worker data. Created by Microsoft, SharePoint portal is one of their best selling products in the company's prestigious history. But what is SharePoint? It is a SharePoint 2010 portal (or SharePoint 2013 portal)...also known as an intranet and it enables employees to find out what's going on in the company, keep track of their assigned tasks, share thoughts and ideas with other employees, and in general it fosters community within an organization. Functions in SharePoint 2013

There's a new sharing function in SharePoint templates 2013 called Access Request and Invitations. When user's try to access sites they don't have permissions to access, they will get a screen that permits them to enter a message which will be sent directly to the administrator. Administrators can have conversations back and forth with these users in these particular SharePoint solutions.


Shredded Storage is another new feature in SharePoint templates that governs how data (including documents) is stored in SQL Server. In older versions, each version of a file was stored in the database separately. But now, only changes are stored thereby reducing space sometimes by a factor of 5. This also increases performance since document retrieval times are lowered with the reduced file sizes. SharePoint templates contains smart algorithms to rebuild files from previous versions just knowing what changed.


The Content Search Web Part (CSWP) shows content from the search index in the SharePoint templates.

The advantage of going with the on-premise version is that it can be customized to a much deeper level because of all of the tight security restrictions in Office 365.
