Purpose of this kind of site:

A. Pulse of the organization: Accomplished through intranet-wide announcement and calendar rollups which aggregate content from across the entire intranet. The top banner can have a message displayed for everyone to see (easy for the administrator to do). The CEO Message web part can display what's on the chief's mind.

B. Morale Booster: Accomplished via the employee solution bundle of web parts: employee recognition, birthdays, and anniversary (from date of hire).

C. Geography/weather info: Put your office or client locations on a Google map. Also, display the local weather in your city.

D. Fun: Quotes of the day (can also be used for serious tips of the day or even company facts). The picture viewer web part can show photos from your last company event.

Choose the layout you like:

A. We have 6 home site layouts to choose from. In this blueprint diagram, notice beneath the header (which consists of the ribbon, title row, navigation bar, and banner), the top row of web parts (labeled WP in the diagram) has 3 columns. And the second row also has 3 columns (QL stands for quick launch which is just another web part). And of course at the bottom is the footer. Other layouts might have 4 columns of web parts instead of 3.

Here’s a link to the different layouts: http://sharepointimplemented.com/ibx/ibx_layouts.html

B. Pick the layout that you like and navigate to its URL and then at the top, choose "Page/Make Homepage". You may want to change the name and/or directory that the page is located in. First, you can rename the page on the same ribbon above by pressing the "Edit Properties" button. If Edit Properties is greyed out or if you'd like to change the file's directory, click on Edit Page/Edit in SharePoint Designer in the ribbon (as shown in the ribbon image below). Note that SharePoint Designer is not available for SharePoint 2013 users and it has to be accomplished via code):
