Create Additional Site Collections:


This section applies if you're NOT going with the "single web app, single site collection, multiple subsite" model. Regardless of which other model you're going with, you've decided to put all of your sites into their own site collections. By this point in the document, you probably already made your main intranet site collection unless you already have your own intranet and just wanted to play with the departments or projects site templates.


In Central Admin, under Application Management/Create Site Collection, choose the web app, enter the title of the site collection, and of course enter the URL. Then choose the site template you want from the SPI tab. Finally, enter the Primary Site Collection Admin.

SharePoint Templates are pre-designed sites for particular business needs. SharePoint Templates have pre-defined set of rules to help you with the site you wish to create. SharePoint Templates can be used exactly as it is if it fulfills your requirement. Or you can also create your own site template if you need some alterations or additional features.

There are some default SharePoint Templates 2010, SharePoint 2010 Template available with SharePoint 2010, some of which are mentioned below with the most basic usage summarized:

Team Site: To organize, share and author information and projects with your teams. This SharePoint Templates 2010, SharePoint 2010 Template contains document libraries, site assets and site pages. Other features like discussion board, calendar and lists like announcement and links are also included.

Group Work Site: To create, organize and share information or memos with a group.

Document Center: This site is used to manage large number of documents for large organizations. Features like document library, workflow, versioning, priority, due date, owner among others aid in a smooth operation.

Personalization Site: Personalized information can be shared, along with MySite.

Enterprise Wiki: To capture and publish large amount of information.

Publishing Site: To publish webpages.

Visio Repository: To view, share and store Visio process diagrams.

Document Workspace: To effectively manage and share documents. There is one single document library provided initially, although you can add more as per your need, preferably keeping different types of documents separate. It also allows you to post tasks, document status and announcements.

Meeting Workspace: To plan, organize and document a meeting with a list of objectives, goals, attendees and the agenda. The document library enables sharing of background material and minutes of meeting. Different versions can be used like Social Meeting Workspace, Multipage Meeting Workspace and Decision Meeting Workspace.

These standard SharePoint 2010 Templates are all available for your use, however, there are also some benefits of creating your own SharePoint Templates 2010, SharePoint 2010 Template, the major one being access to those features and elements which are not included in the default SharePoint 2010 Templates.

Customizing may ensure portable, extensible and immediate deployed solution for future reference.

To create your own site template, you will need to use a site you have created, customizing on SharePoint. Your template can then be shared with and used by different organizations or willing users within your department too. The site can also be opened on other applications and environments.


When you save your site with SharePoint Templates 2010, you create a WSP, which is a Web Solution Package. It is a CAB file with the solution manifest. Your solution is stored in the Solution Gallery from where you can download it or activate it on your server.


Saving a SharePoint 2010 Template means saving the entire framework with the libraries, lists, views, forms and workflows along with the documents or other details you need to save, while taking care of the template size or limit.
