Announcements:

What is it: This is a great place to make general announcements or give company news.

Why did we build it: Calendars are great but sometimes you have information to get out that's not really date specific.

Where does the data come from: The SharePoint list called Announcements.

How to use it: While creating new announcements, you have lots of flexibility with formatting like with fonts, font sizes, font colors, etc. Also, you can include images and links. Also notice the "PostToMain" checkbox allows this announcement to be picked up by not only the current announcements web part, but also by the announcements rollup web part.

Announcements Rollup:

What is it: Grab all flagged announcements across the intranet and display them here (show the first few rows only).

Why did we build it: Departments and projects also have their own announcements and sometimes they may want to some share with the whole company.

How to use it: Simply check the "PostToMain" option for any announcement, from anywhere on your intranet, and that particular announcement will automatically show up on your main Intranet Home page (if that location was set to be scanned in the configuration section).

Announcements Rollup Details:

What is it: When the Announcements Rollup has hit its limit on the number of announcements to display, the user will click the read more button to display the full list.

Why did we build it: We felt that partial and full lists were the way to go!

Footnotes

To keep our product updated and to reap the full benefits of SharePoint 2013 features, we have also migrated our Intranet product from SharePoint 2010 to a Microsoft SharePoint 2013 Intranet. Here's an over of what's new in SharePoint Foundation 2013 and SharePont 2013.

SharePoint Foundation 2013:

Microsoft SharePoint 2013 is the new version of SharePoint which also runs on SharePoint Foundation 2013, the free version of SharePoint. SharePoint Foundation 2013 features many improvements over SharePoint Foundation 2010. SharePoint 2013 Foundation provides companies with an easy to manage and secure solution on the web for collaboration by its users. Besides being free, there is a big list of SharePoint Foundation 2013 features that will be ideal for implementation and use in many organizations. SharePoint 2013 Foundation offers many new things that were much demanded by SharePoint 2010 customers, thus making it even more user friendly. The task timeline is just one of the many improvements offered in SharePoint Foundation 2013. SharePoint 2013 Foundation allows easy organization of documents, coordination of schedules and provides a platform for discussions in the form of blogs, wiki pages and team workspaces.

SharePoint 2013 and SharePoint 2013 Features:

Along with the advanced SharePoint Foundation 2013 features, Microsoft developers have introduced so many exciting and much demanded improvements and new features into the latest version of SharePoint, Microsoft SharePoint 2013, which enhance the SharePoint user experience. SharePoint 2013 features provide many benefits over SharePoint 2010 including things like enhanced mobile browser user experience, better workflows, new SharePoint 2013 templates, as well as a content search web part. Also, SharePoint 2013 consists of shredded storage. This will get rid of any duplicate files that are on your intranet sites and will therefore reduce the amount of data and content that is being stored and sent. Not only that, SharePoint 2013 consists of many major additions that have been made as well as many crucial improvements including improved branding, enhanced management of documents and content through My Sites, improved branding, better social features and an app store model.
